Wakari children attend Otago Enviroschools Hui

Cathy Logie —

Last Friday, four children from our school attended the Otago Enviroschools Hui in South Dunedin. It was all about creating our future climate. Each school group visited a different place to learn about something. We met Megan at the Water Treatment Plant in Tahuna Park. She talked to us about what happens to our dirty water. The water, after it is cleaned goes out to sea in big pipes. The solids or sludge is taken by lorry to the landfill. We learned that when organic waste is covered , it produces methane gas which is a very bad greenhouse gas. All the food that we throw away also goes to the landfill and produces horrible methane gas. The average family in Dunedin throws away $563 worth of uneaten food per year. This comes to $872,000,000 worth of food in NZ!  We talked about how we could reduce the amount of food that we waste by composting at home and not letting food go off.
