Room 2 - Artist Study

Gemma Matsopoulos —

After a busy few weeks of creating our self portraits we have begun our Artist Study in Room's 1, 2 & 3.

Well done to all of the Room 2 children on their hard work and perseverance during our self portrait unit. It really was a labour of love as we studied carefully where we put the features on our faces and made tough decisions such as T-shirt designs and hairstyles for our portraits.

We have now moved onto our Artist Study. Room 2 is looking at the paintings by Vincent van Gogh. The tamariki are making connections between elements of our PBL topic of the "past" and acknowledging that the paintings by our chosen artist were also created a very long time ago in history.

The tamariki are continuing to be historians through our artist study by looking carefully at Vincent van Gogh's art work and the clues that are visible which tell them these paintings are from the past. They looked at the painting "The Room" and could point out some differences between their bedrooms now and the bedroom in the painting.

Working in small groups we will explore the different techniques Van Gogh used in his paintings. Last week we looked at his use of lines in the painting "The Starry Night". We created our own interpretation of this famous artwork using pastel. These are a work in progress and we will continue making our Room 2 Starry Night's over the next few weeks.
