Bringing a book character to life for Matariki - Flit the Pīwakawaka

Gemma Matsopoulos - July 2, 2024

We have had an exciting last few weeks of Term 2 in Room 13. The tamariki loved the read-a-thon and our special dress up day as our favourite book characters. For Matariki we decided to make our favourite pīwakawaka - Flit the Fantail.

What an awesome effort that was put into all of the costumes to mark the end of our read-a-thon. We had the best time at the school parade!

This term we have been writing narratives and learning how to write about a character. Alongside this we have had our read-a-thon which has inspired so many of us to read more and talk about the cool characters from our books.

We adore Flit the Fantail and the adventures he takes his readers on. For Matariki we decided to create Flit after reading the story Flit the Fantail and the Matariki Leaf.

We used scrunched up paper wrapped tightly with masking tape to make his body. We then had to paint him three times! We used our paper construction skills to fold his fan tail and attached it with hot glue. We added his eyes, beak and legs. We then painted a dye background - the Matariki night sky. We used purple and blue to make it look magical. We used 9 sparkly stars to represent each star from the Matariki star cluster. Finally Mrs M glued on our stunning fantails to our backgrounds. We can't wait to put these up in our flash new classroom!
