Tournament Of Minds

TOM team —

Congratulations to the team for their win!

Seven seniors travelled to Christchurch for the regionals of an event called Tournament of Minds.

At the start of the year Mrs Gribben took 20 kids and worked with them. Some people decided it wasn’t for them and we continued to work with 14 kids. Sadly she could only take 7 to Christchurch. In the end Ella, Bram, Amber, Tom, Adam, Liliya and Evie went.

We chose the language and literature challenge. We had to create a food gathering and have at least 4 characters from different genres eg. short story novel or movie. In the end our characters were Paddington, Winnie the Pooh, the Spray and Walk Away Guy (SWAG) Mona Lisa, Little Miss Muffet, Santa and Yogi Bear. They all brought different foods to the picnic and talked about politics like Donald Trunk, Hillary Quackton, Ted Moose, Bark Obama etc.

So the 7 of us travelled  to Christchurch with our families and Mrs Gribben and we did a spontaneous challenge where we had 4 minutes to think of a creative answer to present to the judges. An hour later we did the challenge that we had been working on for 6 weeks. After we had presented that we had the prize giving.

We were all gobsmacked when they said, “It’s the school’s first time and they are all the way from Dunedin, the winner is Wakari School.” We all stood up, we just couldn’t stop smiling. The cheers were amazing coming from our parents.

Now we have been invited to go to Wellington for the Nationals. We are organising some fundraising activities to help us get to Wellington.
