Working with Pip Dick in the Senior Hub

Anna Ollerenshaw —

Every Wednesday after lunch at 1.30 a really nice lady called Pip comes to the Senior Hub to teach us stuff using technology. She also goes to other schools like Balmac too. She also does this thing called Robocup and runs an after school programme called Hatch. It's a place where you can do lots of Project Based Learning, and some programming and 3D printing. Look it up. Last year she taught the seniors to make robots using motors. We really enjoy her coming she has taught us a lot in the past, and now, we hope she comes in the future. We hope you like Pip as much as we do. By Lucy and Charlie N

Roomle

Every Wednesday at 1.30pm lovely Pip comes in and we have been doing Roomle. It is this cool app that we can design rooms and have fun with it. The last couple of weeks we have be making cool houses and big schools we have loved this interesting project. Have a look on Seesaw this week as we will be sharing what we have made.

I'm going to tell you all about it . You can make a school or a house . You can put beds, windows a kitchen and you can even make stuff outside .You can draw walls too. My favourite part of Roomle is that you can make it like a real house.

Max : with Pip we made houses with the app Roomle and it is really fun.

In Roomle if you double click in any spot you will be able to draw some walls.

Takaia: with Pip we made houses with furniture it was really fun.

Earthquake houses

Every Wednesday Pip comes and does amazing stuff with us and we have been doing cool earthquake houses.  It was really cool to see what would happen and we all had an amazing time with Pip. We got a phone and a little bit of brown cardboard and we put the phone on the cardboard and we put an app on the phone and we shook the cardboard. We got results and we got an answer, then if it worked we got 5 felts and put them under it and we shook and it was fun and cool to do it.

With Pip earlier this month we did earthquake drills for our recent topic structures it was really fun and cool . What we did is we got into groups of 4 and 3.  One person from each group got a grey phone a white box and a flat piece of cardboard. For the first test we had to put the phone on top of the box and shake the cardboard. We each had a turn at timing and pausing and shaking the box. On the second test we had to put four colorful pens underneath the box to see if the times improved. On the third test we had to build something to stop the box from falling over we had a choice if we kept the bright pens or not.

On Wednesdays with Pip we did earthquake houses. You have an app on a phone or iPad and a cardboard box and a cardboard platform. We got a phone each and we placed it on the cardboard box then we put the phone on top of the box and went on an app and you put the phone or iPad on the box.

Stop-Motion

Not too long ago Pip came in every Wednesday and taught us how to do stop motion. Well she still comes in every Wednesday, but not to do stop motion! She taught us how to get the app and taught us how to make something move by taking a photo then moving it again and taking a photo. Once it was edited together it looked like it was moving by itself, the shoe was like a snake! Once my group got the hang of it we made a lanky looking stickman appear out of thin air, which became a unicorn riding a rainbow! We can’t wait to see what Pip has for us next after Roomle. Have a look on Seesaw to see some of our examples.

With Pip we have been doing stop-motion. We used the iPads and went on the stop-motion app. Then we went on new folder. Then we got everything ready and we took lots of photos. We had to keep stopping and going. We used objects in the classroom and we had to try and make it smooth. Then we had to move the object a little bit. Then we took another photo. We had to put the iPad on a flat surface so it didn’t jiggle. Me and my partner made a BIG stop-motion it was about littering. Callum and his buddy's stop motion was called "Little Sword, Medium Sword, Big Sword Foot."

Tinkercad and 3D Printing

Last year on Wednesdays Pip came in and taught us how to use the stupendous Tinkercad and make amazing name tags to put on our bags.

We also made coathangers for our beautiful fairyality outfits.

At reading time this year we had incredible amount of fun. Using Ipads and computers to make incredible 3D Tinkercad houses. We had to give them a chimney, windows and a door. Then we could add a light holder to light up the inside of our houses. They had to be hollow on the inside. Each class in the Senior Hub will have a chance to make these this term and next.

Conclusion

During class time Pip has taught us all about Roomle , earthquake houses , stop motion and Tinkercad/3D printing. Asher's favorite thing was Roomle  and Maddy’s favourite thing was stop motion because you had to take lots of exciting photographs. We have had a great time with Pip and can't wait to see what we do next term.
