The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt

Katy Fitzgerald —

Room 8 have been doing some creative writing with our student teacher, Miss Shaw, based on this entertaining picture book.

Here are some examples of our letters to the main character, Duncan:

Dear Duncan,

I’m sad because you never use me for colourful stuff like fireworks, the aurora lights and rainbows. I’M NOT EVEN IN THE RAINBOW. I know white isn’t in the rainbow either but at least she’s BRIGHT.

Your dark friend, Black Crayon

- Claudia

How dare you Duncan,

Your mind is just too creative!

You colour the sky green and the water pink.

You just NEVER use me and it makes me very unhappy.

Perhaps you can try to use me more. Until then, I QUIT!

Your unused friend, Blue Crayon

- Nate

Dear Duncan,

My colour is too light. You can barely see me! Please blend me with a darker colour like...dark green. But not too much because then you can't see me at all. Also, you only use me for the sun which by the way, no-one looks at!

Your disappearing friend,

Yellow Crayon.

- Johanna

Dear Duncan,

Why don’t you use me ? I don’t know why your sister had to sneak into your room when you were at school, you weren’t even there.

I liked how your sister used me to colour in her princess colouring book. She even had a farm colouring book, I loved it.

But Duncan can you please use me for different things. I’m beginning to get annoyed because I hate colouring in playgrounds and pigs' bottoms.

I’m glad your sister used me, you don’t.

From your unused friend, Pink Crayon.

P.S. I LIKE IT AT YOUR SISTER’S. IT’S BETTER!

- Marnie

Dear Duncan

I am sick of being the colour of the sky. It is making me short and did you really have to use me for the night sky? You could have used black or dark blue. Look, I like how you have a favourite colour which is me but come on. do you have to use me all the time?

From your very short friend,

Light Blue

- Lara

Dear Duncan... It's time I retire, you never use me. The last time you used me was for a princess card for your cousin. I am feeling very sad that my wrapper is starting to come off. I am very lonely in the box. Peach crayon is getting more used than me. Just please use me for your next art project.

Your lonely friend, Pink Crayon

- Emma

Dear Duncan,

I am quitting because you use me too much and i'm sick of it and i need a break. But it has been fun drawing all the oceans and lakes. Thanks for all of that but it's been hard because purple and I have been arguing about who's the favourite colour. He keeps being so rude but deep down I know I'm the favourite colour. Thanks for using me so much but yellow and orange are annoying too. They keep arguing about who's the sun's colour. I know it's yellow but orange won't admit it. I'm sick of it too but we cant stop them, so I'm writing this in the hope you can see that I have to have a break.

From your good mate Blue Crayon
