University of Otago Dental School Teeth Brushing Study

David Waddell —

The Senior Syndicate children have this year lucky enough to be invited into a study run by the University of Otago Dental School.

Since the end of Term 2 the Senior Hub have been part of the Otago Dental School project.

One Friday each month they come into show and teach us science about our teeth. The first time they taught us about the amount of sugars in our everyday items such as apples, smoothies, muesli bars and oats etc. We saw how much sugar is really in food and drinks. The amount we should have per day is 20g of sugar!

Every day we must brush our teeth for two minutes after we eat our lunch.

On the very first day of this project we got blue dye put in our mouth to see the amount of plaque on our teeth! We took a survey about how long we brush, what toothpaste we use and why we do it.

At the end we get to go to the University of Otago Dental school and have a turn on the real models that students use!
