Year 6 Cycle Skills
Last week our Year 6 children took part in the Cycle Skills programme. Read the recounts below to see what they got up to!
Last Tuesday, I took part in the Cycle Skills Training. My instructors name was Lily. She was so kind and she also helped people when they needed help with the bike checks. After we finished the bike check we went into our group.
First we learnt how to get on our bikes. What you need to do is put your brakes on and lean, you also need to be on the left side because then you are not where the chains are and you won't get scraped.
After we learned that we learnt how to start the bike. How you do that is you have one of the pedals on the left side and you push off and you are riding your bike. Next we learnt how to gently stop with using brakes safely so that you don't fall off. You safely pull two of your brakes. When we were learning that we played a game. Lily would say "green" and you would keep going. If she said "orange" you would softly be braking and if she said "red" you would stop!
After that game it was time for the test to learn what to do when we are on the road. It was where you look before passing a car and also how long to do your arm sign for. It is 3 seconds. After lunch we went straight to the bottom court and found out if we were going on the road. I went on the road with Hamish. We got to have a bit of fun.

Last Tuesday I took part in the Cycle Skills training. My instructor was called Rose. The first thing we did was ride around on our bikes getting used to the riding area. Rose got us all lined up on the ditch near the playground. We learnt how to get on the bike properly by tilting the bike near myself and swinging a leg over while straightening the bike up.
Next we rode around using that technique. After that, we lined up on the edge of the playground and Rose told us to hop on the bike and put one leg down. She went down the line putting her knees either side of our bike and told us to do the gorilla position. She took her knees off my bike and when she told me I got unstable.
After morning tea we went to Room 8 to watch a video about what to expect if you're riding on the road. When that was finished we went down to the bottom court and Rose set up a course for us to go through. Everybody got a point. I got 6 1/2 points. We went up to the top field to do quick stops and skids.
Next we went back to the bottom court and the instructors had a list of people to ride around on the road. Rose called out mine name first for her group then Alex, Lucy and Micah. We left with Rose and went to the DCC field and crossed the road. We had to buddy up. I was with Lucy. Rose showed us what to do and the boys did it first. Now the girls were copying what Rose did. We did that a few times then moved onto U-turns. After we finished that, we went riding on the road. It was so much fun.
In the end we rode up onto the grass on the DCC field and rode down the grassy hill. I hope I can do it again with my friends.
