Hub 10/11 Water Heroes

Lisa Lowden —

This term the Middles have been enjoying our school wide topic of Water For Life. As part of this topic Hub 10/11 have been looking at storm drains and finding out the importance of them and the impact that they have on our wider environments.

Did you know that when it rains the water on the streets rushes down the gutter and into the stormwater drains carrying any rubbish and chemicals with it. The water then travels to the nearest stream/river/creek and even ocean. This is causing many problems for the creatures/life that lives in those environments. Jenni from Enviroschools has been working with us with our 'Fish on Drains' project. Firstly we designed simple stencils of fish that we thought would look good painted on the drains. We found that the simplest designs worked better. We then looked at all of our stormwater drains around school and painted fish around them. This will hopefully make people think about not littering or even picking up litter that they see around drains. We have made pamphlets about our learning and some tips of people can do to help. We are going to put these into mailboxes around our community this week.
