Matariki Celebrations at Wakari School!

Heather Bonney —

It was fabulous to see so many members of our Wakari School Community brave the chilly evening last term to come and be part of our Matariki Celebration evening at Warkari School!

The talented artists at Wakari School created amazing lanterns which made a wonderful atmosphere in our school hall for our Matariki celebration last term. There were also beautiful Matariki inspired artworks on the walls of the school hall to mark the event.

Our Te Ao Māori Roopū (Māori worldview/language extension group) welcomed our community to the evening and shared the kaupapa (meaning) of Matariki.

- Remembrance - Honouring those we have lost since the last rising of Matariki

- Celebrating the present - Gathering together, sharing.

- Looking to the future - Preparing for the impending season, goal setting.

Some representatives of our Kapa Haka did themselves proud by singing a beautiful waiata for our families. Then we shared a video showcasing the children's artworks which were on the walls of the hall. The children in the video did a fabulous job of sharing their Matariki learning that went alongside the creation of their masterpieces.

We had a lovely evening celebrating together and learning more about Matariki.

Thank you everyone for making it such a special evening!
