Uke Jamming

Caroline Brown —

A group of keen ukulele players recently went to the town hall to participate in the Kiwilele Uke Jam. It was so much fun!!

While we were driving along the crooked road about to get out of the squeaky bus, Roree Charlie and I were talking about the fun that we were about to have. The teacher stopped everyone and told us how we were going to get off the bus. As soon as we got out of the bus, everyone who was going to Uke Jam lined up in single file. When we got in Roree, Charlie, Mrs Brown and I were all that the back of the line and we randomly ran into a GIANT Kiwi. So since we were all at the back Mrs Brown wanted to take a photo of Roree Charlie and I with the kiwi. So we got a photo and rushed in to the HUMUNGUS (main entrance) Town Hall. And we all had the time of our lives. A man called David even played the HUGE organs.          By Milly

As we drove along the crooked road, Milly, Charlie and I discussed what song we were looking forward to the most. Mine was Sweet Child Of Mine. At about 10:00 am, we finally arrived at the grand Town Hall. As we strummed on in to the Town Hall, ( well we didn’t actually, it just fits in with the article) we noticed a life-sized Kiwi! Milly, Charlie and I were actually quite lucky because we got a photo with the Kiwi. As we located our seats, we saw the magnificent Organs. After we were seated we talked until we finally started jamming. Through particular songs we would get up and dance. Also every now and then we would do a Mexican wave with our ukes. Also for the Can-Can a talented man named Dave played the organs and since we were also playing at the time, he played them a short while after while everyone was silent. My favourite part was Sweet Child Of Mine because when the two lines- Woah, oh-oh-oh sweet child of mine. Woah, oh-oh-oh sweet love of mine, we would sing our heads off.    By Roree

At first we went on the bus to the town hall. Then we played our ukulele. The first song we did was Tihore Mai then Riptide. My favourite song was Sweet Child of Mine because someone used their guitar and it sounded just the same as the real song.        By Max

Today [15/8/19]the wakari uke group went to the town hall to participate in the Uke Jam. It was really fun and cool to see how many schools came. It was really loud but really fun to be there. My favourite song was Sweet Child of Mine. Me and my friends Milly R and Roree were yelling when it got to the woah bit. We screamed it out [in Sweet Child of Mine]. My favourite part was when the teachers got in their costumes and had to play Sweet Child of Mine in front of all the 600 kids. It was so funny but cool for them. I hope I can do it again next year and be able to pick for the picking bits.              By Charlie H

Today a group of about 30 kids went to the Ukulele Jam down at the town hall. It’s the 10th anniversary so that's the reason why it was there, it’s usually at Tahuna. There was over 600 kids all over Dunedin went. I got a wee bit hungry just before morning tea, so I started eating my muesli bar. There were these 2D and 3D ukuleles that kids made, and these artists judged them.         By Flynn

On Thursday the Uke group went to the Ukulele Jam at the town hall . There were lots of other schools there. My favourite song that we did was definitely Riptide . We had lots of fun. My favourite instrument that was played was one that someone's uncle had made but I don't know what it was called. The songs that we did were Riptide, Kiwi Ukulele, Starship Lullaby and some others that I don't remember.                   By Molly

On Thursday 15/8 the Wakari Uke group went to the town hall on a bus. We arrived at 10:00am. When we got there we waited for a while until it started. The second song was Riptide. My fingers were really sore. I sat at the right hand side of the row next to Tristin. My dad was there with my aunt. By Jack S.

On Thursday the 15th of August 2019 we had Ukulele Kids Jam in the town hall. We had so much fun. We played Ole Pepe & Sweet Child of Mine & Here to Stay, Don't Give It Up & Riptide. A man named David played the organ.            By Callum

On 15 of August 2019 the Uke kids went to the Dunedin Town Hall to perform at the Ukulele Festival. A man named David played the origan. He came out of a secret place. There was all sorts of different stuff that went on as well as us playing the ukes. At the end we all got badges.                   By Fletcher

At about nine fifteen we went to the Staff room to wait for everyone to come. Then we got our ukuleles and lined up to walk to the bus. When we arrived we trailed up a flight of stairs before entering the hall and getting seated. It was a bit overwhelming as there was over six hundred children there! We got started with a check that all the schools were there and then we went straight into the first song. About halfway through we ate some morning tea and listened to another song. Then came the organist, he was magnificent. The organ sounded wonderful as it bounced off the strong concrete beams bracing the roof against the astonishing sound. Mrs Gribben and all the other teachers in the hall stood up and made their way to the front for ‘Sweet Child Of Mine’ dressed up in wacky outfits. After all of the songs were finished it was time to head back to the bus. With sore fingers we made our way to the bus for the final stretch back to school not returning empty handed, but with badges that said The Kiwileles on them. Finally we took a group photo when we got back to school.                    By Brooklyn

For the Uke Jam we caught a bus to the town hall and then waited for the parents to settle down. Then the band started to play and the children joined in along with their ukes. Mrs Gribben and Mrs Brown took us!       By Ruby
