Tramping, Chess and Edison Robots

David Waddell —

Over the second half of the term, Senior Syndicate Children have been enjoying the Friday Project.

Tramping

An enthsusiastic group of 8 children have been exploring a range of walks that Ōtepoti has to offer. The first trip saw the team explore the Ross Creek tracks as a starting point for their upcoming adventures. Week two and the team was off to Tunnel Beach. They struck an incredible day and got to the beach right on low tide so they were able to explore the beach without getting wet! For their third trip, the children explore the McGouns track, near the Pineapple track at the Ross Creek end. This was a great trip with waterfalls and provided great experience in the bush. Finally it was time for Whānaupaki - Flagstaff. As you can see the team were incredibly lucky with a beautiful Dunedin day. A huge thank you to Alyce Wilson, Karen Ramsay, Aukje Van Aalst and Sam Cadman for taking the children on these trips.

Chess

The Chess Club has been enjoying their time over the last four weeks learning about the game and challenging one another. We had ten keen chess players in the group who's knowledge of the game was very impressive! We started by going through the rules of the game and in particular the special rules such as "castling". The kids had many battles against each other as well as learning different ways of opening the games. They also signed up to the website chesskid.com. On here they could play against a computer and get top tips on how to play the game.

Edison Robots

The Edison Robot group enjoyed their time being able to hone their programming and coding skills. They followed up on the syndicate Thursday sessions with Pip by programming the bots to respond to claps and obstacles. Some impressive coding included using the robots to send a note from one room to another through the syndicate hallway! Other creations included using the sensors on the robots to make an automatic door and getting the robots to talk to each other through infrared technology. Some wonderful team work and collaboration was evident!

Well done to everyone for making the most of the Friday Project groups.
