New pets for Rooms 8 and 9!

Heather Bonney —

Last week new visitors came to Rooms 8 and 9....to live!  We now have hundreds of new pets to look after.  These pets will help us reduce our waste by eating up some of our food scraps!  Can you guess what our new pets are?  Worms!

Earlier this month Jenny Upton came along to visit the eager learners from Rooms 8 and 9.  Jenny Upton is the Enviroschools Regional Coordinator for Otago, and she knew how we have been learning about sustainability and how to reduce, reuse and recycle our waste, so she brought our new pets to school to help use reduce our waste even more!

First, Jenny told us lots of interesting things about worms.  Did you know that our worms are called Tiger Worms?  That is because they have stripes on them like tigers do.   Did you know that worms eat up some dirt and tiny stones at the same time that they are eating their food?  That is so that the tiny stones can act like teeth in the worms belly!  The stones help to mush up the food the worm has eaten.  Did you know that the lump in the middle of the worm has the worms eggs inside it?  We certainly learnt a lot about worms from Jenny!

After we heard the very interesting worm facts we got to have a good look at the worms!  The worms do not like sunlight so burrow under the dirt as much as they can - we had to become worm hunters in order to see them!

Then we made a new home for these worms.  Jenny built a stacker box worm farm for our worms to live in.  Our worms moved into their new home and now enjoy food scrap feasts everyday!  Welcome to Wakari School Tiger Worms!
