Our Collaborative Tapa Cloth!

Heather Bonney —

Some artists from every class in our school came together for an amazing art project. We wanted to make a joint Tapa cloth, with pieces from students in every syndicate so that it would represent our whole school.

This art form is called Tapa.  It is called Ngutu in Tonga, Siapo in Samoa and Masi in Fiji.

We were so lucky to have Janice Tofia work with the artists on this project.  Janice is based at the College of Education and has been working in our school since last year to support our teachers building on their ability to deliver lessons in a culturally responsive manner.

First this group of artists learned how a real Tapa cloth is made from tree bark that has been softened by soaking and beating it. Then they looked at designs that are used on Tapa cloths.  The students were quick to notice that all the designs come from nature. For example trees, flowers, starfish and turtles

If you would like to have a look at the amazing Tapa artwork come along to our school hall, or the stairway leading to Rooms 10 & 11, or the stairway leading from Rooms 1, 2 & 3 to Room 4.

We hope you love it as much as we do!
