Pay and Condition Negotiations

Chris Smith —

Industrial Action looks set to continue.

The latest offer by the Ministry of Education to the Teachers and Principals Union has been turned down by NZEI members.  As the water dirties around the offer and what the profession requires let us not lose the focus for our children.

Education is significantly underfunded, not only in the way we pay our Teachers but in all areas. The Tomorrow Schools Review has set about rectifying, in its opinion, some of these shortfalls. Education is complex with no two days alike. Societal issues are impinging more and more into the School day and Schools are simply unable in some cases to meet these demands. Our Ministry, also underfunded, are of little help especially when we may have a 90 day turn around to get specialists in to observe children who may need extra support.

Early next term NZEI will hold Paid Union Meetings in Dunedin, there will be minimal disruption to your child on these days.

Regards Chris
