Year 7/8 Activity Days 2022

Maree Ford —

Challenge, Grit, Connectivity and Fun

In Week 2 Totara had their three activity days instead of going to camp this year.

Day one was Adrenalin Forest where we stepped outside our comfort zone and reached for new heights.  We had some outstanding climbers getting to Level 6 and some that reached heights they had never done before.  For some this was their first experience. A small group of students also went swimming, had a picnic and relaxed with a good book at Te Ara Ātea

Day two was horse riding at Kowhai Riding School and jet boating at Alpine Jet Thrills.  These were two amazing experiences that we took a lot away from.  We learnt how to ride a horse, care for it and take a trek up over the hill.  On the jet boat we learnt about the Waimakariri River, earthquake plates, how a jet boat works and its history but most of all let the wind whip through our hair.  We also did a fascinating nature walk and some got to feed the rescued lambs. A small group of students went to the city for the day.  They challenged their thinking at the Escape Room, had a wonder through the city to Tūranga where they found out about all sorts of amazing things. A play at Margaret Mahy playground and a picnic lunch.

Day three was a day at school.  We completed orienteering courses, tested our knowledge with Kahoots, shared kai and worked with Selwyn Sports Trust to play Ki O Rahi.

The three days provided opportunities for all the class to work with others, challenge themselves and to get at one with nature.
