Farewell Gil.

Glen Denham —

A number of us attended the funeral of an old boy, former Head Boy in 1961 and past staff member Gil Roper.

Gil was a hugely respected member of staff at WC and he was known throughout New Zealand schools. He played a key role in NZQA as well as being an author, musician and rugby coach. He was an expert in New Zealand fauna particularly of the Tawa area. Gil was a man of tremendous faith. Our previous Headmaster Roger Moses delivered Gil's eulogy beautifully and it was fabulous to see my predecessor Gregor Fountain there at the funeral.

I was so proud of our boys. The choir sang beautifully and the performance of our school haka was very moving. They understood the importance of being there and how important Gil was to all those assembled. Thank you so much boys. I know that Mr Fountain and Mr Moses were equally as proud. I am sure Mr Roper would have loved every minute of your performances and your attendance.

The service was very moving. I didn't know Gil but had heard so much about him from staff. I think out of all the accolades that Gil received in his life, being an incredible father, grandfather, husband and friend to all would be at the top of the list. Gil has five sons, David, Mark, Paul, Simon and Luke and they all spoke. Each son sharing something special about their Dad. They spoke about the greatest thing that a parent could give a child, which is time spent together. My eyes filled with tears listening. Gil's wife Helen spoke last and I can only describe her speech as full of love, strength and faith. Meeting Helen after the service was something I will always treasure.

Dear Gil,
We never met and I feel poorer for it. Wellington College mourns your loss. Staff spoke of your kindness, gentleness, understanding, expertise, patience, professionalism, empathy, humour and love for Wellington College and everyone in it. You put others first and led a life of service. Darrell Harvey, our Associate Headmaster, who you knew well and held you in the highest regard, worked hard to make sure the beautiful garden you planted, outside the AGC, now bears your name with a special plaque. Darrell ensured that this was in place before your funeral.

Gil, I learned lots about you and what was important to you. You have made me think about fatherhood, friendship, family and service. When I walk to my office in the morning, I walk past your garden and the plaque that commemorates you. I will make sure that I take your aroha for people and service to all with me as I start each day. I will do my best Gil, to follow your lead.

Travel well, great man.
