The Wellington College Leadership Institute is launched

The Wellington College Leadership Institute is a structured programme of learning about leadership for teachers.

The aim of the WCLI is to build our leadership capacity, provide the conditions for teachers to learn about leadership, encourage the leadership aspirations of our teachers, and to support our teachers in taking up leadership opportunities. The course will run each year and sits under the umbrella of our newly established Wellington College Research Centre (we look forward to sharing more about this soon).

We have 20 participants involved in the WCLI this year. One element of the course is a workshop series about different aspects of leadership. We held the first of these on Thursday. This took the format of a panel discussion that was focused on the question, ‘what is leadership’. Alongside our Tumuaki, Glen Denham, we were humbled to host Paula Wells (Principal, Samuel Marsden Collegiate) and Gerard Tully (former Rector, St Patrick’s College Silverstream). The discussion was wide-ranging and touched on various facets of effective leadership in schools. It was a privilege to draw on the expertise and experiences of these inspired and inspiring leaders. We thank them for their time and openness.

We look forward to the next workshop, in April, when David Ferguson (Principal, Westlake Boys High School) will lead our WCLI participants in a workshop about strategic leadership.
