School Spirit

Our Jazz band performed last Saturday morning in Palmerston North at a schools Jazz competition.

I was privileged to attend. They were outstanding. I want to sincerely thank Mr Boyle, our Head of Music and Learning Area Leader for the Arts, and Ms Roy, our outstanding music teacher, for all of their work with the band. I watched Mr Boyle and Ms Roy encouraging, enabling and empowering our boys to perform and do their best. The aroha and commitment that they have is extraordinary. I have no doubt that I would have been a musician if either Mr Boyle or Ms Roy had taught me. As you are reading this, can you pause and think about your favourite teacher ever. If you are smiling, it’s exactly that feeling, that memory, that I want our boys to take away from their time with us at WC.

I managed to get to Scots College on Saturday afternoon to watch our 1st XV beat Scots 18-17 on the last kick of the game. The first win in five years at Scots and what a game! I thank all of the boys that turned up, in big numbers, to support the 1st XV. I appreciate the effort you took to get there and the support you gave. Thanks to all the staff that were also present, particularly Mr Keat, Mr Maitland and Ms Vreeburg (who kept us all in check as the game got close. Thank you, Jenna).

I had a great discussion about ‘school spirit’ with a group of students on Tuesday. School spirit is more than supporting sports teams. It’s being tidy, being on time, being a telling school and asking for help. It’s they way we speak to and support each other. It’s coming to class with all the equipment you need. School spirit is humility and grace in action. Taking WC with you in your heart when you leave and knowing that you can always come home. We will always be here when you need us. That's school spirit.
