A Telling School.

A number of years ago we were having a difficult time with one of my children. I talked to my Uncle Bunny about it and he said something that was completely prophetic. “Son, you will only ever be as happy as your unhappiest child."

For me, this is completely true and I would imagine this would resonate and be true for you as well.

Sometimes it’s difficult for our boys to express themselves. Trying to find the words to ‘unclench their hearts’ can be very difficult for them. It is a complete privilege for us as teachers when a student comes up and says “Can I talk to you, I need some help?” This is, and will always be, a sign of strength at WC. Putting your hand up and asking for help no matter what, is to be praised and recognised.

A ‘telling school’ is a school that propagates and encourages this and gives students a chance to have opportunities to ask for help. It might involve school work, friendship issues or the way that they are feeling inside. To this end, I just want to thank our school counsellors and deans who are superb advocates and supporters for our boys. Thank you all.

We, as teachers, are often only as happy as our unhappiest student in class, group or team. I believe that Teaching is a calling. We are called to teach because we love the chance to work with young people and see them grow. This is what makes teaching the best job in the world.

We don’t get everything right at schools. In all my years in teaching I know we, as teachers, come to any situation with great intentions and good hearts. We often have only one side of the coin, and working with parents we get the full picture. It’s a key and valued partnership for everyone.

Thanks to all parents and whanau that have helped and supported us as we seek the best outcomes for our boys. Like you we believe they are worth every effort. Thank you for always listening to both sides of the story and working with us.

Receive the light and pass it on.
