Shelter in place and lockdown
If we need to bring everyone inside, with the exception of emergency services, we may not be able to let anyone into the school/service once we have shut our doors
Please wait for information and instruction from us and do not come to the school until asked to do so, even if it is the end of the day. Arriving when we are still managing an emergency could put you, your child and our staff at risk.
We will continue to provide the very best care we can to keep your child as safe as possible.
If needed and when it is safe to do so, we will ask you to come and collect your child
For some shelter in place events, there won’t be any need for your child to be picked up as school/early learning will continue as normal after the event has ended
Shelter and Place
Parents/Visitors who are waiting outside will be invited into the school, where we will provide shelter for them.
Key risks for our school
In addition to planning for events such as fires, earthquakes and pandemics, we also specifically plan for dealing with suspicious packages and bomb threats, trespassers/attackers on our school grounds
Authorised persons to collect your child
Please update emergency contacts by emailing the office@westrolleston.school.nz as these will be the ones allowed to collect your children from school in an emergency
Reviewing the plan
The plan is reviewed as per our policy and procedure review or after an emergency or drill
Supporting children after an emergency event
Supporting our learners in an emergency event is our absolute priority
We will provide your child with age-appropriate information about the event
We will monitor all children to identify if there are any wellbeing concerns
If you have any concerns about your child please speak with us. We have support mechanisms we can access to provide you and your child with the help you need.
Emergency kit
West Rolleston School has an emergency kit (different from our day-to-day first aid kit) that is kept in the caretakers shed and some supplies are also maintained at the office
The principal assures the board, as per policy review, that the emergency kit is up to date. Office staff ensure the kit kept in the office is checked and maintained, and are responsible for bringing it to any evacuation drill or event. The caretakers ensure the emergency kit kept in the caretakers shed is checked and maintained and is brought to an emergency
Information on children with additional health needs is in the office and in the studios as permitted
