Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ACC)

Jennifer Hoatten —

Electronic communication solutions can be used for students who have difficulty using their natural voice. These are designed for individuals with Autism, Down Syndrome, apraxia, stroke, or other conditions that affect a person’s ability to use natural speech.

Such communication systems can be seen in Te Pa Harakeke, where words, phrases and messages are spoken with a built-in voice synthesizer run through an iPad, giving students a tool to express themselves.

Next time you see someone with such a system, say "hi". They can use their communication system to say "hi" back to you.

See our 'Signs of the Fortnight' below (good / not good).
