Message from the Principal
The BoT have made the decision to close our school due to health and safety reasons on Wednesday 15 August as our teachers go on strike. It is never an easy decision to strike because of the implications for learners and families but it highlights the serious concerns we have for our profession.
The last time I went on strike was twenty four years ago and I was teaching a Y2 class at North New Brighton School - a school which no longer exists! The role of a teacher has changed so much since then, the demands on a teacher and the paperwork has more than quadrupled. We need better conditions to appeal to amazing men and women across the country that teaching is a suitable role that can be undertaken while supporting a family and enjoying a balanced life. Did you know that after five years of teaching 50% of teachers choose to leave the profession. So I apologise for the strike day and hope you understand the reasons teachers have chosen such a drastic action.
Yesterday we had several school teams represent our school in a local zone competition for netball and rugby. Thanks to Mr Peter Northmore and Mr Fraser Malins for organising another great opportunity for our learners. Thanks to the parents and siblings who helped coach - Sarah Fidow, Bobbie Borland, Millie Martin and Laura Freeman.
Today we started our GROW programme - thanks to parents who are helping with this. We have children playing netball, conducting science experiments, making wearable arts, coding, dancing, baking - just to name a few of the amazing opportunities.
Finally this week we temporarily farewell Miss Rebecca Lambert who leaves us for motherhood! We wish you all the best Bec. Welcome back to Mrs Tess Rodgers and Mrs Lauren Hill who are returning from maternity leave and will teach in Te Ara Whanake. Congratulations to Miss Janelle Osborne who will be Acting Team Leader.
ngā mihi
