Cultural Opportunities
As a school we value culture and diversity very highly and recognise the incredible contribution all cultures have in creating our shared environment.
We offer a range of cultural opportunities at West Rolleston Primary School to ensure our learners and whānau feel connected, engaged and represented within the school.
We have Kapa Haka, performing traditional Māori dances, focusing on the important components of kapa haka, its intrinsic link to culture and Māori identity, and the essential element of whanaungatanga, the importance of people and connectedness.
We also have a Pasifika group, singing and dancing has always been an integral part of Pacific cultures, it is a form of oratory history that has allowed Pacific cultures to survive throughout the years.
Both of these run once a week and children are welcome to join.
We also have a Te Reo Māori club during lunchtimes once a week on offer for tamariki to come along and extend their language and understanding of Te Ao Māori.
AKO days are an extension of this and happen once a term. They give learners from all year levels the opportunity to be immersed in Māori culture in a tuakana-teina environment for a whole day learning about te reo and te ao Māori and the values of Taumutu, our local marae.
We run events throughout the year encouraging our school community to share and celebrate their cultures in a fun and safe way.
We encourage whānau of different ethnic groups who would like to be involved in running activities to please get in touch!
