West Rolleston Primary School Cultural Celebration

Katie Talbot —

On Thursday 28th March West Rolleston Primary School held our first ever celebration of Culture and Diversity.

Our school is made up of a multicultural community of over 18 different nationalities and many different languages.

Since the beginning of the year all of our different learning studios have been looking at diversity and the ways in which we are all different. We have enjoyed learning about traditions and foods from other countries, music and dance enjoyed by different people, tourism, customs and border security at different airports. We have created Rangoli designs with colored salt and rice, Mexican Mirrors, Chinese Dragons, our pepeha and more!

On Thursday we invited our school community to join us in a huge celebration. Our learners dressed up to share their cultural heritage with us, our parents dressed up and we all shared kai together.

Councillor Craig Watson from the Selwyn District Council joined us and spoke about the diversity in Selwyn and why this makes us such a great place. Our Principal Ms Fidow spoke to us about how we must be proud of where we came from and who we are. We are the only person like us in the whole world!

We know that some of the most important things we can teach our children are around kindness, understanding, acceptance and empathy. Otautahi is an extremely resilient city and we know that with our children growing to lead the future we are in good hands.
