Message from the Principal

Sylvia Fidow —

Next Wednesday [the first day back to school after Easter] we have our first ever WHEELATHON fundraiser. The goal is for our learners to scoot or skate or bike as many laps as they can in a 30 minute period to raise money for our much anticipated bike track!

You will see two big thermometer fundraising placards around our school which have been kindly donated to us by Melissa and Tim Cochrane. We will add to these thermometers as we raise money. Big thanks to everyone for supporting our mufti day last week which raised $780. Thanks to Miss Dionne Wallace, Miss Rebecca Lambert, Mrs Amanda Clarkson and the GROW team for their efforts with organising this fundraiser. I know Nicole Richards from GROW has organised some great prizes for learners who raise the most money.

On Tuesday all of our Year 5-8 girls attended a multi sport day in Lincoln to promote girls playing sport. I received some lovely feedback from the girls 'this was so fun' 'it was good to have a go on our own' and the staff who attended this. Thanks to Miss Kendra Ward and Miss Jess Cooper for organising!

This week our Year 7/8 learners presented some really interesting statistical data to Rob Hunt from our Board of Trustees, and two councillors from the Selwyn Council, Mark Alexander, Nicole Reid and Jessica Fairbrass who is a road safety advisor at the council. The data related to the information the children have been gathering in our parent carpark, our staff carpark and on Dunns Crossing Rd. They have made the following recommendations to improve road safety:

* Put up a sign asking parents and whānau not to use their phones while driving

* Ask the Government to make hi vis vests paid as some parents cannot afford them

* Have road safety leaders near the kiss and go to remind parents and whanau these are not car parks

* Reduce the speed limit outside the school to 20km

* Make more provision for staff car parks and make exiting the staff car park safer for our staff

I was so impressed with the Year 7/8 presentations [data, noticings, trends, graphs, conclusions and recommendations] and very proud of what they had achieved.

One noticing that other parents have also made me aware of is that parents are exiting the staff carpark from the enter only driveway before and after school. Please please do not do this as it is so dangerous.

Thanks for your support.

Finally, we are pleased that our new relocatable studio will be arriving next week. It will still take some weeks to set the studio up.

Have a safe and happy easter, and we will see you back at school next Wednesday.

Ngā mihi

Sylvia
