Planting swan plant seeds in Te Kete Kākano Kakariki

Maria Romero came to raise awareness around the decline in monarch butterflies-especially in Rolleston.

Maria Romero came to raise awareness around the decline in monarch butterflies-especially in Rolleston. We planted hundreds of swan plant seeds that will grow and be ready for eggs to be laid on in January. We will continue to water the seeds and grow them into big plants! You can read more about Maria's work here https://thebutterflymusketeers.com/

Here are some facts we learnt about monarch butterflies:

Monarch butterflies can smell a swan plant from 2km away.

It is better to keep your plants covered with netting until they are big enough for the caterpillars to eat.

Girl monarch butterflies do not have the black spots in the middle of their wings.

It is not a good idea to feed caterpillars pumpkin or courgette because it makes their wings deformed.
