Message from the Principal

Sylvia Fidow —

This year one of our BoT's strategic goals is to raise the achievement of learners in maths. We have a professional learning and development programme for our staff based on maths and as you can see from the photo this involves detailed observations of our teachers delivering their programmes (thanks Miss Woods!)

It also includes educating our parents on how you can help at home as research shows that children make better gains in their learning when their family/whānau is not just interested in their learning but are fully involved and contributing. On Tuesday evening Ben Galletly and Amanda Clarkson ran a parent workshop and we had 14 parents attend. They will be repeating this session tomorrow at 2pm in the staff-lounge. All welcome, they provide a general overview from Years 1-8.

Thanks also to Miss Hollie Stone and Mrs Megan Murray for organising a maths extension opportunity for our Year 7 and 8 learners. Two teams represented our school last night at the Cantamaths Competition at Horncastle Arena. It was a great experience to solve maths problems in a timed competition - high pressure so well done to Lucas Briggs, Jay Singh, Jazmine Sheard, Carla Greyling, Kaitlin Johnson, Heath Burton, Tamzin Taylor and Ashley Uren.

Last night we also held our first ever WRPS's GoT Talent Finals. Thanks to Mrs Karen Townsend and Miss Claudia Copeland for their organisation and to all of the staff, families and our learners for their efforts. It's not easy to perform in front of a large group so well done to all of the performers who were so brave! Thanks also to our judges - Lee Scheepers, Miss Laura Finn and Shantay who won the Rolleston College competition. The money raised will go towards the Arts budget.

We are now looking forward to our upcoming performances in the Cultural Festival and the Kids for Kids Concert.

ngā mihi

Sylvia
