Te Pa Harakeke - Building Relationships through Communication

Jennifer Hoatten —

This term in Te Pa Harakeke our Theme focus is on using key language while building relationships. Students use a range of strategies to communicate, including use of Coreboards, Sign Language, Talkers and verbal communication while working alongside others.

What is a Coreboard?

A core board (see image) is a communication system that is made up of core vocabulary. These words make up about 70% of the words that we say and write. For example, if I wanted to say "I want to go shopping" - all the bold words are what we consider 'core vocabulary'. Having this as part of our toolbox for our akonga means that they have free access to communicate a wide range of messages.

Signs of the Fortnight

Our signs of the fortnight are 'hello' and 'how are you?'

When you think of “language” you might just think of your spoken native language. However, language involves many other aspects including body language, emotional language, and more. Studies show that people who sign have improved abilities to read general body language – an integral part of communication.
