School Attendance

West Rolleston —

Pou Whirinak Attendance Support & Rolleston Learning Community + Drop-in sessions at WRPS

Kia ora whānau,

We hope you and your tamariki have had a positive start to the school year. At WRPS, we are dedicated to supporting families and ensuring that all children have the opportunity to engage fully in their education.

As part of our ongoing commitment to attendance, we are partnering with Pou Whirinaki, who will be working closely with our school and whānau to support students with their school attendance over the next eight weeks.

How This May Involve You

The Pou Whirinaki team may reach out to families whose tamariki:

  • Have had historical attendance challenges

  • Have any unjustified absences within the first two weeks of school

  • Have been referred to the service due to either of reasons above

Their goal is to work together with you to understand any barriers to attendance and provide guidance, resources, and encouragement to support regular school engagement.

What You Can Expect

  • Friendly and supportive conversations to discuss attendance and any concerns you may have.

  • Home visits or informal check-ins, if needed, to offer assistance.

  • Practical support, referrals to helpful services, and collaboration with the school to ensure your child is getting the best possible support.

Drop-In Sessions at WRPS

This support is for families who may be experiencing difficulties getting their child to school or who may have barriers that are affecting attendance.

The team of support workers will be running drop-in sessions at West Rolleston Primary on Tuesdays beginning Tuesday 4th March from 9 - 10am in the library. If you have anything that you would like to discuss please feel free to come along to these sessions.

The support includes:

  1. Introduction and Hearing Your Story

  2. Whānau Wellbeing

  3. Routines in the Home

  4. Strengthening School-Home Connections

  5. Addressing Barriers to Attendance

  6. Referrals to Support Services

  7. Celebrating Progress

  8. Transition and Future Planning

If you would like to attend these sessions please email meganmurray@westrolleston.school.nz or come along on Tuesday morning.

We understand that every family’s situation is unique, and this approach is about listening, supporting, and working together.

If you have any questions or would like to connect with us about this initiative, please feel free to reach out. We are here to support you and your tamariki on their learning journey.

Ngā mihi,
