Positive Behaviour For Learning

Jody Hadlee-Watts —

We continue to teach the expected behaviours from our behaviour matrix.

Our focus lessons for the next two weeks are:

Week 7 - Focus on set tasks (Westburn Value - Hiranga - Excellence)

Week 8 - Try to solve problems yourself, and know when to seek help (Westburn Value - Hiranga - Excellence)

Suggestions to help your child focus on a set task.

Play 'Beat the Clock'.

With the game 'Beat the Clock' you set a predetermined amount of time (using a timer) for your child to get something done. If your child is 5 years old they should be able to focus on the task for five minutes. While the timer is going they should focus only on completing the task at hand. Ensure the task you are giving your child will take almost the entire time to complete.

Use puzzles - Puzzles are a great way to get children thinking. Because puzzles often feel like a game, children are interested in solving them and discovering the solution, but they don't feel like they are learning.

Play memory games - Memory games allow children to keep their mind engaged without noticing how intently they are focusing, keeping them interested and concentrated even longer. As their memory improves through games they can apply these skills to the classroom.
