Curriculum expectations on written reports

Susan Jennison —

This article relates to what you will see in your child's written report for 2018. It explains how to interpret the table detailing where children should be achieving for each year level of school.

Assessment against the levels of the New Zealand Curriculum helps to give teachers, your child and yourself a clear idea of where your child is achieving.

Teachers use many different tools, learning experiences and opportunities to determine where your child’s achievement sits in respect to the curriculum. These include:

· A range of formal tests and assessment tasks;

· Observing your child learning in the classroom;

· Talking with your child about their learning; and

· Your child assessing their own learning.

In written reports we have for some time now noted a curriculum sub-level grade to indicate where your child is achieving in relation to the curriculum and expected achievement for their age. This year we’ve introduced a graphic to indicate the curriculum level that your child is working at and the expectation for their age. In this scale:

Beg’ means that your child is working at the beginning of that curriculum level and has grasped some of the basic concepts taught.

Mid’ means that your child is working at the middle of that curriculum level and understands many concepts at that level.

End’ means that your child is working at the end of that curriculum level and has an understanding of most of the concepts at that level.
