Maths Week 2020

Jane Brown —

This week, students in all year levels have participated in some fun maths activities as part of annual Maths Week celebrations.

Before school, students could enter a competition to estimate how many objects were in a jar. A joke competition was running and classes had a great laugh researching their entries. Students also made maths posters using tesselations.

This week in Code Club students learnt how to use the pen function to draw shapes using Scratch. This involved programming two sprites to glide to a position on the stage, draw a shape then glide back to their original position. Students used the 'broadcast' and 'receive' blocks to programme the sprites to take turns at drawing their shapes. This project required our programmers to use lots of math in their code. They needed to use co-ordinates, positive and negative numbers, wait times, angles, length and geometry knowledge to ensure their shapes were drawn correctly. Our programmers demonstrated perseverance, problem-solving and communication skills as they created, tested and debugged their projects.

In the classrooms, this week students have participated in a Cantamath competition, created 3D shapes from toothpicks and wine gums and played games such as 'The Chase' and 'Daily Dollar'. Board Games such as 'Number Crash' and 'One More, One Less' have been a fun way to celebrate Maths Week.
