Refurbishment update - Week 17
If you've visited Westburn School this week, you'll no doubt have noticed the work undertaken at our entrance.
Early on in the planning for our school refurbishment it became apparent that the school's entrance needed redevelopment. The area by the crossing is the most obvious entrance to the school, yet there's no direct access to the school site at that point.
This project was originally part of the school refurbishment but financial constraints have led to it being removed and managed as a separate board-led project instead. Once again, we're grateful to trustees Richard Smith & Leith Skinner who are leading this work for us.
Entranceway
In an effort to streamline access to classrooms and spaces from the school entrance, we have this week removed the small courtyard outside the staffroom. This space was only used once a year and, since it was a dead-end, it regularly caused confusion for visitors to the school who tried to access our site via that space.
It's amazing how large the space is now that the paving, fences, and hedges have been removed!
Hann Construction will be undertaking some work to the admin block over the Christmas holidays and, once this is complete, the development of the entrance area will be undertaken.
The development includes the removal of the decorative brick wall with our school name on it. The metal lettering will instead be mounted on the wall of the admin block.
New paving will link the entranceway to the paved space at the end of Room 9, and seating and gardens will be created in this area.
Another exciting feature is that we have commissioned the design of two pou which will be installed at our street frontage.
There's a lot to be done at the start of the year. In the meantime, watch this space!
Bike & scooter stands
During the planning stages of our redevelopment we also identified the necessity of eliminating children's need to access the driveway with bikes and scooters. Having children and cars/trucks in the same space is far from desirable!
As you will know, WSCA has been creating new bike and scooter stands for children in two separate areas on the school site. Once the final project is complete (January 2021) children will no longer be using the school driveway. Pedestrian access will be fenced off permanently once the refurbishment is complete.
We're very grateful to WSCA for their partnership with us in providing these facilities for children.
