Chinese Language Week
Room 3 have been learning about Chinese Language and about the Mid Autumn Festival.
After reading about Moon Cakes and Mid Autumn Festival, some Room 3 students reflected on what it means to their family.
My grandma makes moon cakes from flour and sweet bean paste. Many people invited us over to their house but we couldn’t go because of Covid 19. We make dumplings and then we eat them. We wear silky clothing with dragons and other patterns. The main colours of the clothes are red, blue, yellow. There are lanterns that can float because there is a candle inside the lantern and the hot air pushes the lantern up and we put them over lakes and rivers. The lanterns are to celebrate moon lady. There are red posters that some people put up on walls and it is said to ward off evil spirits. There are incense sticks that are meant to smell good and also we have fireworks and fire sticks. The fireworks are usually red, yellow or blue. The fire sticks have little sparks at the end and then there are candles that are just normal candles. The candle base is black, red or yellow. There is a rule that you can’t say the number four, because in Chinese it sounds like death. The people celebrate this time of year and we rejoice because this is a time for family to stay together and have fun.

My family invites friends and people over. They make lots of food and then everyone eats together. They make a special meal. Before they eat everyone talks to each other. We buy moon cakes but also make them as well and they are really good. Sometimes my family will tell me stories and other things about the Mid Autumn Festival.

In my family we eat moon cakes. Moon cakes taste so good. The egg is in there but the egg is not sweet. We don't eat moon cakes all year, just for Moon Festival. We eat moon cakes because there is a moon lady. Her name is chang e.
