'Maths, No Problem' selected as a preferred resource by the Ministry of Education
The Minister of Education, Erica Stanford, announced last term that selected resources that met the aims of the Minstry's structured approach to Maths would be made available to schools from 2025.
Having researched Maths, No Problem ourselves and trialling it during 2023 and 2024, we were reasonably confident that it would be selected by the Ministry as an approved resource for use. It is based on Singapore Maths and has proven increasingly effective in our Years 3-6 classes.
Last night the Minister announced four resources that have been approved - and Maths, No Problem is one of them.
The practice of students simply working their way through a text book to learn by osmosis had been abandoned in New Zealand by the 1990s, but don't be fooled! These textbooks require children to be taught (and taught well in a consistent manner) in order to independently complete their workbook activities.
We've already booked further staff training for a Ministry-implemented Teacher Only Day next year to ensure that all of our teachers are up to date in its use. Having a large group of teachers who've successfully used it already is an added bonus that will strengthen practice across our school.
