Team 3 Science Focus

Louise Clarkson —

In team 3 we have been learning to observe science experiments. Our classes have been mixed up and have rotated around each teacher to experience five different tasks and record their observations.

Magic Trick - In this experiment, students sprinkle pepper into a plate of water. With a cotton bud they drop some dishwashing liquid into the centre of the plate and observe the magic trick. All of the students were amazed by the effect the detergent had on the pepper. We learnt a lot about surface tension in this experiment.

Rain Cloud in a Jar - In this experiment children drop food colouring through a cloud of shaving foam that is floating on water and have to carefully observe the outcome. The children were surprised by the result and had to carefully draw what they saw.

We made elephant toothpaste using hydrogen peroxide, food colouring, washing detergent and active yeast. Children wrote a hypothesis first, then they observed the student scientist complete the experiment.

In room 8 children watched a video about potato chips being made and then experimented to see how much flame different types of chips or crackers produced when they were set on fire. This was an observation only task! The energy created by burning food showed the children that there are definitely food groups that they should avoid.

Room 21 looked at how different heats can affect the speed at which popping corn will pop. Children were encouraged to time and observe the reactions for each heat tried.
