Canterbury Cross Country Competition

Nicole Dale —

The Canterbury Cross Country Compeition was held on the 22nd of June 2022 at Ngā Puna Wai.

Cross Country Canterburies was held on the 22nd of June 2022 at Ngā Puna Wai.

Westburn had many students who represented Westburn in this cross country event and they were Isabella, Rachael, Lara, Corey, Felix, Daniel, Ellie, Alivia, Thomas, Shen, Nia, Phoebe, Ruby, Harley, and Jesse who qualified but didn’t attend.

This was a crazy competitive day with all the other schools in Canterbury. Having so many schools there meant that there were around 150+ people per race, so fierce competition to fight for a place. We got divided into our zones while getting ready to race, which for Westburn is North West.

There were twelve people in each zone and many, many zones. At the start everyone sprinted across a field to get into the front. When you go through a closed-in bush area it’s like a warzone with people falling over everywhere.

After you're out of the bush everyone spreads out a bit and it’s all about pacing yourself and getting to the end from there. Everyone competing for Westburn did a superb job but a massive congratulations to Daniel Carey for placing 2nd place in the Year 6 boys category.

Thank you to the parents who gave up their time to transport us to Ngā Puna Wai and to Mrs Wilkins for accompanying us.
