Winners of Kirkwood Technology Cooking Competition!
Congratulations to Brooke, Aaliyah, Lucia and Evangeline in Year 8.
On Thursday the 20th of August, Brooke, Aaliyah, Evangeline and Lucia went to Kirkwood Intermediate to participate in The Kirkwood Technology cooking competition.
Schools from all across Christchurch also participated. The rules of the competition were each team member could bring one ingredient that cost $3 or less to add to the dish(es). The teams were given a mystery box containing ten ingredients and seven of them had to be used, these ingredients include rice, beans, broccoli, canned tomatoes, canned corn kernels, apple, turmeric, carrot. Then at 5 pm in the middle of the cook, teams were also given two more ingredients that had to be used and these were buttered popcorn and a chocolate flake.
The judges were on a Zoom call along with some other students from different schools. The food was judged on the presentation and menu description. 10 minutes was given for planning what to make within two hours and in this time the girls looked through recipe books and wrote down recipes that they could change for the suitability of ingredients that they had.
The girls that represented Westburn School decided to make corn fritters for the entree, minestrone soup for the main and an apple and cinnamon cheesecake for dessert.
Westburn School got an email back from the teachers at Kirkwood which said that the girls had won and will be getting a trophy sent to the school.
