School Welcome
Tēnā koutou katoa, Welcome to Westburn Te Kura o Hereora.
We are a vibrant and culturally diverse state, coeducational, full primary school situated in the northwest of Christchurch. Our school was established in 1962 and has a proud history of achievement and strong traditions that align with our values.
We offer Years 1-8 children an excellent academic education and an extensive range of social, sporting, and cultural opportunities.
Music teaching has long been a significant strength of our school as evidenced by the success of our Specialist Music Programme (SMP). Our successful senior and junior choirs, symphony orchestra, jazz band, and various ensembles ensure that Westburn continues to be recognised as a school with flourishing, high-quality music programmes.
We operate in ‘single-cell’ classrooms within three teams named after the growth stages of Tī Kouka (the Cabbage Tree) following the cultural narrative gifted to us by Ngāi Tahu:
Koata Years 1-3, The growth shoots of Tī Kouka
Kōpura Years 4-6, The taproot of Tī Kouka
Tī Whanake Years 7-8, A variety of Tī Kouka
Our school’s vision is ‘Today’s Learners, Tomorrow’s Leaders’ is central to our belief that all of our students have the potential to lead in some way, whether this be in the workplace, on the sports field, in a cultural setting, or in the community.
