Our Year 5 students recently took part in their highly anticipated Ngā Rā Wero (Challenge Days), experiencing two action-packed days of adventure, creativity, and teamwork at Lake Rua and in the city.

A Day of Art, Exploration, and Engineering

In town, students embarked on an artistic and intellectual journey, beginning with a visit to the local art gallery. They explored sculptures using these as inspiration to create their own unique pieces of art. At the library, they tackled an exciting scavenger hunt, testing their research skills and teamwork as they searched for clues.

A highlight of the day was the Imagination Station, where students faced Lego challenges that required critical thinking and collaboration. They worked together to build impressive structures, reinforcing the importance of communication and problem-solving. The day in the city was a perfect blend of creativity and discovery, sparking enthusiasm and a deeper appreciation for the arts and engineering.

Water, Wind, and Resilience at Lake Rua

At Lake Rua, the students embraced the elements in a series of water-based challenges designed to build confidence and resilience. Water safety activities saw them balancing on paddleboards, ducking under a dinghy to discover an air pocket underneath, and racing across upside-down boats before plunging into the cool water. They also worked in teams to design and construct rafts, testing their creations on the lake to see if they would float. The teamwork, determination, and problem-solving skills displayed were truly inspiring. These activities not only built water confidence but also reinforced key survival skills.

Despite an unexpected change in weather that prevented kayaking, students demonstrated adaptability and resilience, embracing alternative challenges with enthusiasm. Kayaking was a planned activity, but instead, the students got to jump off a ramp and swim in the cool lake.

More Than Just a Challenge

Ngā Rā Wero was more than just fun and adventure—it was a powerful opportunity for personal growth. Students faced challenges head-on, supported their peers, and stepped out of their comfort zones. The activities encouraged perseverance, creativity, and collaboration, leaving students with a sense of accomplishment and newfound confidence.

These challenge days will surely be remembered as a highlight of the year, reinforcing key life skills that will serve our students well into the future. Ka pai, Year 5s, for your resilience, teamwork, and enthusiasm!
