The students in J Te reo visited Punakaiki learning all about the rock formations.

On Wednesday, 27th July, Mr Waller and Mrs Weepu took the J Te Reo class to study the rock formations at Punakaiki. They looked at the famous pancake rocks and learned that they were formed 30 million years ago from minute fragments of dead marine creatures and plants landed on the seabed about 2 km below the surface. 

Seismic action over the years has lifted the limestone above the seabed and mildly acidic rain, wind and seawater has sculpted the interesting shapes. These shapes make for wonderful photographs.

The students also looked into the cave just along from the Punakaiki village and braved the rain to look at the wonderful pou at the entrance to the Pororari track. 

One of our international students, Julia accompanied the students on their trip and J Te Reo students should be very proud of the manaakitanga they showed towards our new student. Julia was warmly welcomed and she reports that she had a wonderful trip as did the students of J Te Reo.
