News from the Middle School APL

Mr Talbot - Middle school APL —

Term 2 is well underway and that marks the start of a new season for extra-curricular activities.

Kia ora Middle School students and whanau,

Term 2 is well underway and that marks the start of a new season for extra-curricular activities.

It would be great to see all of our WHS Middle Schoolers involved in extracurricular activities this winter. Please contact us if you’d like any further information.

Some winter sports options include Kiwi rugby club fielding an U15 side, WHS providing multiple netball teams, Friday night basketball is charging on at 7.30pm (all welcome), badminton Mondays, Blue Spur Mountain bike tracks, WHS cross country in week 3, WHS drama production (Footloose), some great winter fishing options, and many more.

Students and parents and caregivers need to keep an ear out for the constant changes to NCEA. Previously NCEA has begun in Year 11, but upcoming changes mean your student may be involved in NCEA assessments as early as Year 10.

Westland High School is doing its utmost to keep the community informed as these changes are made public. What we do know for sure is that further emphasis will be put on numeracy and literacy, with more stringent and earlier testing of all students. With this in mind, extra tutoring is offered by our Mathematics department every Monday from 3pm - 4.30pm in the Westhub. The revamped library is available as a device free and quiet reading space every lunch time. Science Club continues on Monday lunch times with the term 3 Science Fair in mind. All Middle School students are welcome in all of these spaces.

If you have concerns about your student at Westland High School, you should contact your young persons whanau teacher in the first instance.

Work hard to stay busy this winter, your health and grades will surely benefit.

Kind Regards,

Mike Talbot
