Waka cards and encouraging positive student behaviours

Mr P. Brailsford - Deputy Principal Ākonga —

Westland High School uses WAKA cards as a way of encouraging and supporting positive behaviour of students in class and around the school.

Our WAKA cards are part of a broader strategy of establishing Positive Behaviour for Learning across the school.

A student receives a WAKA card if they have been demonstrating aspects of the school values; Whanaungatanga (supporting positive relationships) and Manaakitanga (showing care and support of others).

In particular, they may be;

Working together to succeed
Actively participating in their learning
Kind and respectful
Ako - always ready to learn

Receiving WAKA card is an acknowledgement that the student has been doing the right thing and making positive choices. Students are encouraged to show those at home that they have been given a card. They are also encouraged to put in the WAKA card box in the Library to be in to win a prize at the draw at assembly. Westland High School is pleased to recognise students making positive choices to support their learning, and the learning of others.

Students who consistently exemplify the school values to a high standard are acknowledged with a Manaakitanga or Whanaungatanga badge which are awarded at the end of each term. Students can add their badges to their school uniform.
