WCSS Football
The Westland High School Football teams recently participated in the West Coast Secondary School Open Football tournament held in Karamea, providing them with an excellent opportunity to sharpen their skills and display their abilities. The Girl's team reached the finals but unfortunately lost in a penalty shootout against South Westland Area School. Similarly, the Boy's team made it to the finals but narrowly lost 1-0 to Karamea Area School. Despite these close defeats, both teams had a productive day, competing in 5 to 6 matches each before reaching the finals, which made for a demanding and tiring schedule.
The tournament was marked by spirited performances from both the boy's and girls' teams, showcasing their dedication and teamwork throughout the day. The success of the trip was also credited to Erena Johnston, who served as the manager and provided invaluable support.
Additionally, the community's support was evident as parents contributed delicious meals and baking. Overall, the tournament was a significant experience for the WHS Football teams, highlighting their competitive spirit and the strong support system surrounding them.

Rolling with Joy: Aroha's Roller Skating Initiative Thrives at Westland High School
At Westland High School, every Friday at lunchtime has become a time of excitement and exhilaration, all thanks to Aroha's passionate dedication to roller skating. What started as a vision supported by the Tu Manawa Active Aotearoa funding application in 2022 has blossomed into a beloved weekly tradition that has captured the hearts of students and staff alike.
Aroha, with her infectious enthusiasm and deep love for roller skating, has not only brought this exhilarating sport to the school grounds but has also nurtured a community of young skaters who eagerly look forward to their Friday sessions. Her unwavering commitment goes beyond just teaching the basics of skating; it's about creating a space where students can express themselves, build confidence, and forge lasting friendships on wheels.
"It's more than just skating," Aroha remarks with a smile. "It's about creating moments of joy and connection. Seeing the kids light up when they glide across the floor—it's truly priceless."
Under her guidance, the roller skating project has flourished, drawing participants from various backgrounds and skill levels. From hesitant beginners gaining their balance to seasoned skaters perfecting their tricks, Aroha's inclusive approach ensures that everyone feels welcome and supported.
As the project continues to grow, supported by Aroha's boundless energy and the backing of the school administration, the future looks bright for roller skating at Westland High School. With plans to expand equipment and potentially introduce themed skate days, Aroha remains committed to fostering a love for skating that transcends the school grounds.
To Aroha and all involved, the Westland High School community extends its heartfelt thanks for turning Fridays into a celebration of skill, laughter, and unforgettable moments on wheels. With each glide and spin, Aroha's roller skating initiative continues to roll forward, leaving a trail of smiles and memories in its wake.
