Meet Ms O'Malley, teacher of English and Classical studies

Westland High School —

Ms O'Malley has been teaching with us for a term now and fits in so well it's as if she has always been a part of the team.

Ko Opuke te maunga.
Ko Otakaro te awa.
Ko Charlotte Jane te waka.
Ko Grace O'Malley Pirate Queen toku tipuna.
No Otautahi ahau.
Kei Kokatahi toku kainga inaianei.
Ko O'Rourke toku hapu.
Ko Siobhan toku ingoa.

Siobhan is currently a sharemilker in Kokatahi with her husband Christopher and three children. She has moved around the South Island sharemilking for the past ten years, teaching for short stints at a range of secondary schools, and is happy to be settled on the West Coast and able to take up a permanent role teaching English and Classical Studies.

Employing people through the sharemilking business has given Siobhan a new appreciation for the importance of strong communication skills and the difference English skills can make for student success beyond school. She also enjoys sharing her passion for the primary sector and agribusiness with interested students.

Siobhan's lifelong passion for Classical Studies saw her complete a Master of Arts (distinction) studying Latin language, ancient art and architecture, philosophy and literature. She believes Classics is a fantastic subject because it is so interdisciplinary and provides students opportunities to learn a range of critical thinking skills using the ancient world as a context. It is also fundamental to recognise and trace the influence of Ancient Greece and Rome on the modern Western World.

She loves nothing better than a cup of tea.
