Career guidance is a collaborative effort of guidance by staff, teachers, whānau members, and community partners. This information is provided to assist with career awareness, career exploration, and career preparation of students with the objective of facilitating a successful transition into post-secondary opportunities and the 21st century global workplace

Ara Institute of Canterbury

If any students who are thinking of applying to study at Ara or have any questions about our study options, Ara are willing to help.

Depending on the number of students who may be interested they could, book a zoom application session for students or book individual sessions either via zoom or phone.

They can cover information such as:

A guided campus tour is a great way to see Ara in action and get a feel for what it's like to study there. They can introduce you to the campuses, or delivered a tailored tour of your particular area of interest. These tours can be for individuals too.

They provide an overview of qualifications and courses, including the services and support they offer students, followed by a guided, informative walk around campus. A student liaison representative will be available to answer your questions. 

You can request a campus tour through their online form and they'll contact you to organise a suitable day and time. 

On-Campus Open Day Lincoln University.

This will take place on Tuesday 8th September, from 4pm to 8pm. More details about the Open Day will follow, and there will be more information on the Lincoln University Website, and social media feeds over the coming weeks. The Open Day will provide a great opportunity for Prospective Students and their Parents to visit the Lincoln University Campus, have a look around and gain some information on possible study options.

University Scholarships for Year 13 Students

MoneyHub, a consumer finance website, has published a guide to hundreds of scholarships for any student planning to start university in 2021. The comprehensive list includes scholarships offered by every university as well as those specifically available to local students. A list of privately-funded, Maori, Pacific and International university scholarships completes the list.

Key deadlines approach

Key milestones are approaching for Year 13 students thinking of university in 2021.

A new online resource is available “The Next Step to Your Future at UC” which includes key tips and advice on what students need to do and when. Students will receive these web links via emails as dates progress.

Canterbury University Accommodation Application Process

Applications for accommodation for February 2021 onwards opened on 1 August.

There are two steps to complete an application:

They recommend students select a larger hall such as University Hall or the brand new Tupuānuku as one of their three preferences. Applications and CCRFs are matched electronically based on name and date of birth so it is essential that content is entered the same in both. Offers and waitlist offers will be made from 1 October, with late applications considered on 23 October. Find out more here>

Scholarship applications due for University of Caterbury

Applications for UC scholarships are due by 15 August. Students can search the database and make one application online for multiple scholarships. They have tips and advice, including a webinar recording on our website to help students present themselves in the best light. Applications are required for all scholarships now.

University of Catenrbury Campus visits

If students and their whānau can’t attend Rā Tōmene | UC Open Day on 27 August, they can:

Guided tours include our learning facilities and social spaces, with optional visits to the student halls of residence (until mid-September). Some tours also include College visits, where students meet staff and see the facilities related to qualifications of interest.

Upcoming events and visits.

  • 10th August Canterbury University: A visit from the Liaison Officer Blake
  • Course Planning session Lincoln University: Liaison Officer David will travel over in the last week of Term 3 to come over to the West Coast (Mon 21st September- Friday 25th September). If any students are looking at going to Lincoln University, please contact Whaea C to arrange an interview.
  • 27th August 9am Defence Recruiting Officer: A visit from Petty Officer Kat Mohi, Naval recruiter for Christchurch. There will also be an Army and Airforce recruiter in attendance.
  • 10-12 September The NZ Careers Expo: Christchurch, Horncastle arena. The Expohas been partnering with schools and quality exhibitors for the past 29 years, continuing to provide New Zealand’s largest and longest running careers event of its kind and bringing alive the vast opportunities in the world of work, training and study. We are excited to be able to stage these events, having postponed from term 2, to provide a positive input into the lives of our young people as they consider employment and training opportunities in a post Covid environment.
