Thank you to the Hazeldine family

Belinda Conn —

Ron and Jill have been a very large support to the student exchange programme at Westland High School over the years

The Hazeldine family’s journey with the Westland High School international programme began 20 years ago in 2002 when they were asked to host a short-stay student from Florida, USA.

From that time Ron and Jill went on to host more than 18 students from all over the world for differing periods of time, some 10 days and in one instance two years!

The couple gave students their time and love and as a result have kindled close relationships with them, still keeping in touch with many via texts, letters and visits. Their home has many photographs and mementos of these times and both Jill and Ron have so much warmth and enthusiasm when they remember their times hosting.

Jill has fond memories of nurturing shy students through the tough times by finding “their key” whether this was music, baking, swimming or writing. She says there was always a way in if you gave them space to breathe.

If you are familiar with Ron and Jill you will know that music is a big part of their lives and they found that often the students had an interest in this too. Ron recalls one student who was very interested in watching Ron play the guitar at the Woodstock Hotel and at home. After some lessons with local music teacher Chris Thompson he went from no experience at all to being a very accomplished player within about six months.

Ron sings Jill’s praises and says she did a “sterling job” of mothering teenagers.

The Westland High School International Programme would like to say a very big thank you to Ron and Jill and wish them all the best for the next chapter of their lives.

If you are interested in becoming a host family please give Jane Brownie a call or email.
