We've had a huge term in the Sports department this term. It's been packed with Athletics, Swimming, Futsal, Touch rugby, Basketball, Cricket and more!
Senior Futsal took place in Greymouth
What an action-packed day!
On Wednesday 22nd February Greymouth High School hosted a futsal tournament. From our school, we had one senior boys' team and a girl's team competing in this tournament.
WHS Boys team - Jacob Kelly, Alex Sever, Allan Harris, Oliver Wieblitz, Bruce Miller, Brennan Curtain.
WHS Girls- Ella Stewart, Maddison Given, Taylor Jeffrey, Eilish Johnston, Sakina Kubodera
Congratulations to both teams for playing fantastic football. Both teams showed excellent improvement throughout the day and should be proud of their efforts.
Senior Touch hosted by South Westland Area School (SWAS)
On Tuesday 28th February, SWAS hosted the West Coast Senior Touch Tournament. All the practice during the lunch break paid off, What a result form both our teams! Our Girl's team won the tournament and the boys' team was the runner-up.
A big thank you to Coach Sheldon Lee for coaching the teams and refereeing games throughout the day. He worked tirelessly behind the scenes to give both teams the best chance of success. His knowledge and expertise around the tournament play have been invaluable to our teams and we at WHS greatly appreciate his efforts.

Thanks to SWAS for teaching us how to play Ki o Rahi during the day as well. The students loved it.
West Coast Athletics took place in Greymouth at ANZAC park.
WHS Athletes brought home more great results from West Coast Athletics. From our school, we had 46 athletes who were competing in different track & field events. It was great to see so many smiles on their faces. Congratulations to those that placed in events. Thank you to Greymouth Athletic club and School Sports Canterbury with their help in running this massive event.

Canterbury Athletics Champs - Christchurch
What a stellar effort!!!
On the Saturday Max Johansson & Tamsin Gillespie competed in the Canterbury Secondary Schools Athletics.
Max Johansson finished 7th in his 100m final and came 2nd in his 200m final! Tamsin ran her heart out with a personal best to place 4th in the 1500m and 7th in the 800m. A spectacular effort from both students. We are very proud of you both!
3x3 Basketball hosted by Buller in Westport.
On the 14th of March, We had our first West Coast Secondary School 3x3 Basketball Tournament. Westland High School had 19 students representing the school in the different grades at this Comp. Our athletes played hard and showed great sportsmanship on and off the courts achieving some awesome results.

Canterbury Swimming Champs
We had four students qualify for the Canterbury Swimming champs, they are: Leon Ross, Renny Jones, Cooper Gaskell and Ben Provis. Congratulations to you all.
From our school, three swimmers took part on the 30th of March. Renny Jones, Ben Provis, and Cooper Gaskell. Renny placed 7th overall out of 35 in 50m freestyle & 8th in 50m backstroke. Ben placed 4th in 50m backstroke and 9th in 50m breaststroke and Cooper placed 13th in 50m breaststroke.
Junior Cricket - Greymouth
This term we had the year 7 and 8 Cricket festival in Greymouth. It was a fun day of cricket with all kids getting a turn at batting and bowling in each game. The games are played with soft cricket balls and kiwi cricket rules. It was a great opportunity for experienced students to practice and for students new to the game to have a go. Thanks to Sports Canterbury & West Coast cricket for organising this awesome day!
