Contagious infectious diseases

Westland High School —

We have been notified of a couple of infections diseases currently circulating in the community. Read on for more information.

We have been notified of three different infectious diseases/conditions:

Impetigo also known as School sores. It's a crusty rash that requires seeing a medical professional for a prescription to treat it effectively. Students will need to stay home from school for 24 hours after treatment starts.

Chicken pox. This is a rash with spotty pustule like blisters in the centre. It can be exceptionally itchy and can be contracted through coughing and sneezing. Students need to stay home until all of the blisters are empty and the sores 'scabbed' over.

Head lice also known as nits. This can be treated with a number of treatments available through the pharmacy and requires the removal of eggs as well as lice. To ensure you are successful with the removal you will need to repeat the process 7 days after inital treatment to catch any eggs that are hatching. To minimise the chances of getting head lice we recommend tying long hair up.
